EVITY (which stands for 'EVIdence-based medicine for longeviTY') is a young Belgian company founded by 2 doctors, Prof. Dr. Carlos Van Mieghem & Dr. Kathleen Van Aken, out of concern for the current medical landscape:
On the one hand, there is an increased life expectancy, mainly due to improved living conditions and top technological medicine. On the other hand, however, we see a worrying increase in chronic diseases that are mainly caused by how we live that life…. We have created for ourselves a lifestyle of prosperity that unfortunately does not always benefit our health, resulting in chronic diseases (diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, dementia, depression…) and loss of quality of life, at an increasingly earlier age.
This forces us as doctors to take a different approach to illness and health…where there should be much more room for prevention and early treatment of these lifestyle diseases by actively guiding clients/patients towards a better lifestyle and thus towards better health and quality of life.
A complete diet with sufficient proteins, healthy fats and the right carbohydrates is an indispensable pillar in a lifestyle medicine approach and it is often a challenge to meet the right needs in a qualitative way; this applies in particular to (quality) proteins.
The average protein requirement for a human is 1-2g per kg body weight/day, in some circumstances higher, but there are numerous conditions and reasons why this requirement is often not met despite sincere efforts with natural and healthy nutrition (recovery, rehabilitation, sports, chronic illness). The 'elephant in the room', i.e. an essential vital parameter that is underexposed and ensures our quality of life in old age, is the maintenance of a critical amount of muscle mass. A lack of muscle mass, being sarcopenia, which is promoted by the natural aging process, is an important health issue and should receive the necessary attention in an innovative health policy.
In addition to exercise, there is a need for sufficient building blocks to maintain and build muscle mass. EVITY has chosen to collaborate with the company Alika Nutrition because we want to rely on a natural and high-quality protein supplement.
